Who is responsible

The short version

• You can read the site without creating an account or giving us your name.
• We store an email address only if you sign up for the newsletter.
• Votes are anonymous. We cannot tell who cast them.
• We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which stories are read. It sets cookies in your browser.
• The site is funded by advertising, managed by Ezoic. Ezoic and its advertising partners use cookies, and where the law requires it you are asked for your consent first.
• We do not sell personal data for money. Advertising partners receive data as described under Advertising.

Newsletter

If you sign up for the newsletter, we store your email address, the page you signed up on and the date. We use this only to send you the newsletter. The legal basis is your consent.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by writing to [email protected]. We will then delete your address from the list.

Votes and hearts

When you use the thumbs or heart buttons, we set one cookie named moos_v containing a random identifier. It lasts up to one year and exists only so that each reader counts once per item and can change a vote later. We store a scrambled form of that identifier next to the vote. It is not linked to your name, your email address or any other information about you.

To limit abuse, we also keep a scrambled form of your IP address for a short time, up to about two hours, to count how many requests come from one connection.

Settings kept in your browser

Your chosen text size, the votes you have cast and whether you have signed up for the newsletter are saved in your browser's local storage, so the site looks the same on your next visit. This information stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can clear it at any time in your browser settings.

Server logs

Like nearly every website, our hosting provider records technical information about each request, such as the IP address, the time, the page requested and the browser type. These logs are used to keep the site running and secure, and are deleted after a limited period.

Photographs served by Unsplash

Most photographs on this site are loaded directly from the servers of Unsplash (images.unsplash.com). To deliver them, Unsplash receives your IP address and basic browser information. Unsplash's own privacy policy applies to that processing.

Advertising (Ezoic)

The site is funded by advertising. We work with Ezoic Inc., 6023 Innovation Way, Carlsbad, California 92009, United States, which manages the advertising on this site, including interest-based advertising from third parties.

When you open a page, your browser loads scripts from Ezoic, from the domains gatekeeperconsent.com, ezojs.com and ezoicanalytics.com. Through them Ezoic receives your IP address and technical information about your browser and device, and measures how the pages and the advertisements on them are used.

Ezoic and its advertising partners may use cookies, tags, beacons, pixels and similar technologies to deliver advertisements, measure their performance and tailor them to your interests. According to Ezoic, the information used for personalized advertising can include your IP address, operating system, device type, language settings, browser type and an email address in hashed or encrypted form. Ezoic's partners may also collect unique identifiers, advertising IDs, location data, usage and device data, the page you came from and your interactions with pages and advertisements, and combine these with information collected elsewhere to show targeted advertising across websites, devices and apps. We do not give Ezoic your newsletter address.

Where the law requires your consent, as it does in the European Union and the United Kingdom, a consent window asks for your choice before these technologies are used for advertising. The window is provided by Gatekeeper Consent, the consent tool Ezoic supplies. The legal basis is your consent. If you decline, you still see advertisements, but they are not personalized. To change or withdraw your choice later, delete the cookies and site data for this site in your browser; the window then asks again.

Ezoic and its partners may process data outside the country you live in, including in the United States. Ezoic Inc. states that it is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Analytics (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: how many people visit, which stories they read, how they found us and roughly where they are. The service is provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, which processes the data on our behalf together with Google LLC in the United States.

When you open a page, your browser loads a script from www.googletagmanager.com and sends usage data to Google. This includes the page address and title, the page you came from, the time and length of your visit, interactions such as scrolling and clicks on outgoing links, your browser, device type, screen size and language, and an approximate location (country, region and city) worked out from your IP address. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store the IP address itself.

To tell visitors apart and recognize a returning browser, Google Analytics sets the cookies _ga and _ga_ZTPRBYGPRW. They contain a random identifier and last up to two years. We do not send Google your name or email address, and we do not use the advertising features of Google Analytics.

Data may be processed on Google servers outside the country you live in, including in the United States. Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Google's own privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.

You can stop Google Analytics from recording your visits by installing Google's opt-out browser add-on from tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, or by blocking or deleting cookies in your browser settings. The site works the same without them.

How long we keep data

• Newsletter addresses: until you unsubscribe.
• Vote records: kept in anonymous form for as long as the article is published.
• Abuse-prevention records: up to about two hours.
• The moos_v cookie: up to one year after your last vote.
• Google Analytics cookies: up to two years after your last visit.
• Google Analytics usage data: visitor-level data is deleted after 2 months. Summarized statistics that no longer identify a visitor are kept longer.
• Advertising cookies and similar technologies: set by Ezoic and its advertising partners. How long they last varies by partner.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its use, to receive a copy, and to withdraw a consent you have given. To use any of these rights, write to [email protected]. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Residents of California and other US states with privacy laws have comparable rights, including the right to know, to delete and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information for money. Under some of these laws, passing data to advertising partners for personalized advertising counts as a sale or as sharing. You can opt out of it at youradchoices.com, and in the privacy choices window where one is shown.

Children

The site is written for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.

Our articles and photo credits link to other websites. We are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when what we do changes. The date at the top shows the latest version.
